Book Summary:

This issue of The Ministry of the Word contains the last eight messages given during the fall 2002 term of the full-time training in Anaheim, California. The general subject of this series of messages is "Christ and the Church in the Psalms." The messages in this issue cover Psalms 118 through 150. In Psalm 118 we see Christ as the stone for God's building. God's building is God's expression. God's eternal intention is to have a corporate, glorious, living, organic, eternal divine-human expression of Himself, which is His building. Christ, the stone which the builders rejected, became the head of the corner in resurrection. Christ, the stone, is constituting Himself into us through transformation to make us living stones for God's building. Then He, as the foundation stone, cornerstone, and topstone, and we, as the many living stones, will become the glorious dwelling place of God, which is typified by the temple. In Psalm 119 we see that Christ is the reality of the law as the testimony of God and the word of God. Christ is the reality of the law as the testimony of God, signifying Christ as the living portrait of all that God is.

Book Summary:

div> Fruit for My Seed /div T oday is Sunday, December 2, 2012. It is a beautiful day out here in Victoria, Mexico. It is the perfect day and weather to be out at the local weekly street fair. Rather, today I find myself sitting in my room, reflecting on my past, thinking about the present, and wondering what the future has in store for our family. I recently returned today from a weekend of hoops that began in Mexico City and ended in Acapulco, Mexico. We concluded our two game road trip last night in Acapulco as we pulled out a hard fought victory over the Guerreros of Chilpancingo. After traveling on our team bus all night and day, we returned safely back here just a few hours ago. Although I am pleased and happy with this past weekend’s results on the hardwood, nothing makes me smile as each day comes and goes, closer to the day I will finally get to hug, kiss, and hold you in my arms. I think about you all the time, son. In just a few short weeks, you will come into this world and be here with your family. It is a privilege and a blessing to be a father. I want to make you this promise now Lorenzo Karon Keeler Jr, I will strive to be the best provider, role model, motivator, friend, and father I can possibly be. I will always be here for you as long as I am living and breathing on this earth. I once heard a man say, “There is no manual on how to be a good father.” When I heard this a few years ago it struck me to be true. As I continued on this journey of life and went through trials, learned lessons, and gained knowledge over the last year, I no longer believe that statement to be true. I have gone through my fair share of ups, downs, tribulations, hurts, disappointments, and failures. It was through these challenges that I finally picked up a very exclusive manual and began to learn the lessons, knowledge, and wisdom it had to offer. In PROVERBS 23:12, God’s Word tells us, “Apply your heart to instruction, And your ears to words of knowledge.” It all began with me taking action and applying my heart to the word of the Lord. Now I know without a doubt in my mind that this manual, also known as the Holy Bible, is the ONLY road map to peace and an abundant, purposed life. The Bible can lead, guide, and teach every human being on earth how to become GREAT fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, etc. PROVERBS 19:8 says, “He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; He who keeps understanding will find good.” Over the last year, I have gained much wisdom and knowledge from God’s mighty word. I realized if I just apply His counsel to my life, it will change my life for the better. PROVERBS 24:3-4, “Through wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established; By knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” Applying the Lord’s counsel to our life is beneficial to us here on earth and qualifies us for eternal life in Heaven with our Heavenly Father. I pray I will be on this earth with you for many years to come. I pray I will be here from watching you take your first steps to witnessing you exchange vows with your beautiful bride on your wedding day. The fact of the matter is we do not know when it is our time to depart from this earth. Only God knows when our time is up and when our day is over. I could be here fifty more years or fifty more minutes. Because I do not know, I want to leave you with my story. It is through these events that I have learned valuable lessons. It is through these events that I realized true peace and happiness cannot be found in anything this world has to offer. I want you to be aware of the choices I made and the consequences that followed. At 27 years old, many may say I am young and have much more living to do. Yes, I am young and I pray I have many more years ahead. However, I am thankful to be alive and in my right mind today. Believe me when I tell you, son, I once traveled on a path full of dangerous activities. I willfully participated in a life of sin and I could have been dead a long time ago. I am thankful for our Heavenly Father’s love, care, mercy, faithfulness, and protection even when I did not deserve it. I will be the first to admit I do not have it all figured out. As a matter a fact, I am still learning and growing daily. However, I do know one thing for certain. Without God in our life and the Holy Spirit leading and guiding us, we are not living. PROVERBS 9:10-12 tells us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”

Book Summary:

A Path by Light: Part 3 By: Alfred J. Harradine In prayer Alfred J. Harradine felt the Lord calling him to write the novel A Path by Light, yet he had no idea what it would be about until he started writing. After a while, he kept thinking about The Lord’s Prayer. As he wrote and prayed about the first novel in the A Path by Light series, it became very clear to him that Jesus, in teaching us how to pray, tried to let us know we do not have to die before we can live and experience the Heavenly Kingdom. He calls us to live that Kingdom now on Earth as it will be in Heaven. If He is teaching us to pray about doing it, surely He will also teach us how to live that life. When Harradine finished, he had written five short novels in the A Path by Light series. His original intent was to have them published separately, but his wife, Nancy, and friends suggested that he combine parts I-V into one novel. After much prayer that is what he did. While waiting for the first A Path by Light to be published, he started writing and completed this second book in this series combining parts VI-X. The Lord had more for him to share so he continued to write and now this is the third book in the series which combines parts Xl-XV.

In a retelling of her marital journey, Fady begins by disclosing how her path first crossed with a handsome, reserved young man of Lebanese descent who lived seven thousand miles away, and then leads others through their joined experiences as she, a devout Christian, blended her life with a Catholic reluctant to talk about his faith. As she reveals how she eventually became a Catholic and prayed to find a more unified spiritual path as husband and wife, Fady shares insight into how married couples, even when they are united as one, can be driven apart by deep wounds. Throughout her story of love, hope, forgiveness, and healing, Fady reminds all of us that God is always here to provide everlasting love and mercy. With Sanctifying Grace ... Speak of Me is the story of an American woman’s marital journey with a Lebanese man while living in Christian faith, through all its joys and sorrows.

Jane Austen's Anglicanism

Book Summary:

In her re-examination of Jane Austen's Anglicanism, Laura Mooneyham White suggests that engaging with Austen's world in all its strangeness and remoteness reveals the novelist's intensely different presumptions about the cosmos and human nature. While Austen's readers often project postmodern and secular perspectives onto an Austen who reflects their own times and values, White argues that viewing Austen's Anglicanism through the lens of primary sources of the period, including the complex history of the Georgian church to which Austen was intimately connected all her life, provides a context for understanding the central conflict between Austen's malicious wit and her family's testimony to her Christian piety and kindness. White draws connections between Austen's experiences with the clergy, liturgy, doctrine, and religious readings and their fictional parallels in the novels; shows how orthodox Anglican concepts such as natural law and the Great Chain of Being resonate in Austen's work; and explores Austen's awareness of the moral problems of authorship relative to God as Creator. She concludes by surveying the ontological and moral gulf between the worldview of Emma and Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, arguing that the evangelical earnestness of Austen's day had become a figure of mockery by the late nineteenth century.

Book Summary:

In this taking of earthly life, I found God's presence. Certainly not His purpose, but the silent thread He weaves so gently through pain, loss and heartache. I found it in John, finding the strength to stay faithful to his post. Keeping a long, steady, quiet watch over his wife, his children and himself. I found it in the testimony of Sharon's words and actions throughout this journey. Through the entire 13 months, no matter how hazy, painful or senseless each day became, she stayed true to her faith in Jesus. Though her life became a whisper as the cancer bulged, the proof of her faith, what the Bible calls "the evidence of things not seen," shouted loud and clear.

Book Summary:

With over a million copies sold, this classic work is essential reading for all who ask, “Where has my struggle led me?” A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on an unforgettable spiritual adventure. Here he shares the deeply personal and resonant meditation that led him to discover the place within where God has chosen to dwell. As Nouwen reflects on Rembrandt’s painting in light of his own life journey, he evokes a powerful drama of the classic parable in a rich, captivating way that is sure to reverberate in the hearts of readers. Nouwen probes the several movements of the parable: the younger son’s return, the father’s restoration of sonship, the elder son’s resentfulness, and the father’s compassion. The themes of homecoming, affirmation, and reconciliation will be newly discovered by all who have known loneliness, dejection, jealousy, or anger. The challenge to love as God loves, and to be loved as God’s beloved, will be seen as the ultimate revelation of the parable known to Christians throughout time, and is here represented with a vigor and power fresh for our times.

Book Summary:

What does it mean to pray without ceasing? Is it really that important to pray as the early Church did? In this installment of The Ancient Practices series, Robert Benson presents a structure for our lives where we can live in continued awareness of God’s presence and reality. A pattern for worship and prayer that is offered to God at specific times throughout the day, the daily office is meant to be prayed by all the faithful so the Church may be continuous and God’s work in this world may be sustained. Yet it is highly personal too—an anchor between the daily and the divine, the mundane and the marvelous. Says author Robert Benson, “At some point, high-minded discussion about our life of prayer has to work its way into the dailyness of our lives. At some point, we have to move from talking about prayer to saying our prayers so that the marvelous that is possible has a chance to appear.” In Constant Prayer is your gateway to deeper communion with God. Expect something new to unfold before you and within you while heeding this ancient call. The Ancient Practices There is a hunger in every human heart for connection, primitive and raw, to God. To satisfy it, many are beginning to explore traditional spiritual disciplines used for centuries . . . everything from fixed-hour prayer to fasting to sincere observance of the Sabbath. Compelling and readable, the Ancient Practices series is for every spiritual sojourner, for every Christian seeker who wants more.

Book Summary:

What if fear is the new brave? That's the question that you need answered if you are living afraid. Finding courage begins with fear itself--fear of the Lord. I Choose Brave reveals a countercultural plan to help you where you are--knee-deep in fears of parenting, the future, your marriage, and a world that feels unstable. When you're feeling fearful, the last thing you need is a social-media meme telling you to simply "power through" your fears. In I Choose Brave, Katie Westenberg digs deep into Scripture and shows that finding the courage to overcome our fears must start with fear of the Lord. Book Summary:

Secret Prayer is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by Hannah More (2 February 1745 – 7 September 1833) was an English religious writer and philanthropist, remembered as a poet and playwright in the circle of Johnson, Reynolds and Garrick, as a writer on moral and religious subjects, and as a practical philanthropist. Born in Bristol, she taught at a school established there by her father and began writing plays. She became involved with the London literary elite as a leading Bluestocking member. Her plays and poetry became more evangelical and she joined a group campaigning against the slave trade. In the 1790s she wrote several Cheap Repository Tracts on moral, religious and political topics, for distribution to the literate poor. Meanwhile, she did increasing philanthropic work in the Mendip area, encouraged by William Wilberforce. Born in 1745 at Fishponds in the parish of Stapleton, near Bristol, Hannah More was the fourth of five daughters of Jacob More (1700-1783), a schoolmaster originally from Harleston, Norfolk. He was from a strong Presbyterian family in Norfolk, but had become a member of the Church of England, and originally intended to pursue a career in the Church, but after the disappointment of losing a lawsuit over an estate he had hoped to inherit, he moved to Bristol, where he became an excise officer and was later appointed to teach at the Fishponds free school. They were a close family and the sisters were first educated by their father, learning Latin and mathematics: Hannah was also taught by her elder sisters, through whom she learned French. Her conversational French was improved by spending time with French prisoners of war in Frenchay during the Seven Years' War. She was keen to learn, and possessed a sharp intellect she was assiduous in studying, and according to family tradition, began writing at an early age. In 1758 Jacob established his own girls' boarding school at Trinity Street in Bristol for the elder sisters, Mary and Elizabeth to run, while he and his wife moved to Stony Hill in the city to open a school for boys. Hannah More became a pupil when she was twelve years old, and taught at the school in her early adulthood.

Book Summary:

Falling Awake offers a reflection—one for each day of the year—to encourage individuals to seek out and to find those moments of quiet and solitude in which they can attune themselves to God’s quiet voice. By drawing upon the insights and experiences of Fr. Mark Burger, author, the reflections in Falling Awake present a gradual and immersive way to grow closer to God. The pace of modern life is frantic, hectic, and frenetic. Falling Awake recognizes that most people live in precisely that reality. In response, the reflections suggest slowing down, reducing the volume, eliminating the distractions, and freeing one’s ears to listen for that voice, the one from God that waits patiently for the right moment to speak softly in one’s ear. When you are ready to listen, God will speak; this is the promise Falling Awake makes. It shows, through the experiences of God’s people in biblical and modern times, that God works slowly and incrementally to change people’s lives by speaking to them.
