Book Summary:

This book contributes to the international debate on Indigenous Peoples Law, containing both in-depth research of Scandinavian historical and legal contexts with respect to the Sami and demonstrating current stances in Sami Law research. In addition to chapters by well-known Scandinavian experts, the collection also comments on the legal situation in Norway, Sweden and Finland in relation to other jurisdictions and indigenous peoples, in particular with experiences and developments in Canada and New Zealand. The book displays the current research frontier among the Scandinavian countries, what the present-day issues are and how the nation states have responded so far to claims of Sami rights. The study sheds light on the contrasts between the three countries on the one hand, and between Scandinavia, Canada and New Zealand on the other, showing that although there are obvious differences, for instance related to colonisation and present legal solutions, there are also shared experiences among the indigenous peoples and the States. Filling a gap in an under-researched area of Sami rights, this book will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers and policy-makers with an interest in Indigenous Peoples Law and comparative research.

Book Summary:

The first English publication of Sami folktales from Scandinavia collected and illustrated in the early twentieth century Although versions of tales about wizards and magical reindeer from northern Scandinavia are found in European folk and fairytale collections, stories told by the indigenous Nordic Sami themselves are rare in English translation. The stories in By the Fire, collected by the Danish artist and ethnographer Emilie Demant Hatt (1873–1958) during her travels in the early twentieth century among the nomadic Sami in Swedish Sápmi, are the exception—and a matchless pleasure, granting entry to a fascinating world of wonder and peril, of nature imbued with spirits, and strangers to be outwitted with gumption and craft. Between 1907 and 1916 Demant Hatt recorded tales of magic animals, otherworldly girls who marry Sami men, and cannibalistic ogres or Stallos. Many of her storytellers were women, and the memorable tales included in this collection tell of plucky girls and women who outfox their attackers (whether Russian bandits, mysterious Dog-Turks, or Swedish farmers) and save their people. Here as well are tales of ghosts and pestilent spirits, murdered babies who come back to haunt their parents, and legends in which the Sami are both persecuted by their enemies and cleverly resistant. By the Fire, first published in Danish in 1922, features Demant Hatt’s original linoleum prints, incorporating and transforming her visual memories of Sápmi in a style influenced by the northern European Expressionists after World War I. With Demant Hatt’s field notes and commentary and translator Barbara Sjoholm’s Afterword (accompanied by photographs), this first English publication of By the Fire is at once a significant contribution to the canon of world literature, a unique glimpse into Sami culture, and a testament to the enduring art of storytelling.

Book Summary:

The clean air, smelling of spruce and moss in the summer and of newly fallen snow in winter, is unforgettable in Sweden. Written by a full-time resident, this is the definitive guide to Stockholm and the beautiful archipelago close by. There are cities we visit for their stunning beauty, others for their cultural offerings, and still others for their cuisine and fashionable bars. And then there is Stockholm, a striking, vibrant city with historic charm situated where lake Mnlaren begins to mix with the Baltic Sea. Its waters are so clean that you can go swimming or fishing anywhere, even in the heart of city. This beautiful city is spread out over 14 islands that are tied together with a filigree of deep blue waterways, artsy tunnels, pedestrian-friendly bridges and emerald-green park land. There is a fascinating mix of architectural styles, ranging from medieval, to Renaissance and fin de si cle pomp OCo in shades of yellow and burnt ochre, with soft greens and every hue of brown OCo and finally to an almost brutal modernism. In this 750-year-old city, high-rise buildings made of glass and concrete share the skyline with historic ornate towers, turrets, church spires and patina rooftops, all in a workable blend. Today's multi-ethnic Stockholm boasts 70 museums, 100 art galleries, over 100 slott (castles, palaces and manor houses). There are some 1,500 restaurants, many of which are run by award-winning chefs and, for a city with a relatively short summer season, an amazing number of establishments with outdoor seating. If this is not enough to entice visitors, there is an added attraction: the unique and amazingly beautiful archipelago, consisting of 24,000 islands and islets (called skerrets) only 25 minutes from the city center. One third of Stockholm is water, with Gamla Stan as a divider between Lake Mnlaren and Lake SaltsjAn, which leads out to the archipelago and the Baltic Sea. The narrow waterways in between the small and large islands are perfect for leisurely paddling a rented kayak or canoe. And for a unique fishing expedition, just place yourself on a pretty city bridge, fishing pole in hand, and look down into the clear, sparkling and pollution-free city waters. Fishing has been allowed here since the 15th century and today, in a most unusual fishing environment, perch, pike, trout, salmon and some additional 25 varieties of fish are thriving. Art, culture, folklore, shopping, walks, water sports and more. Each book offers an ideal mix of practical travel info along with activities. And the fun is for everyone, no matter what their age or ability. Comprehensive background information - history, culture, geography and climate - gives you a solid knowledge of each destination and its people. Regional chapters take you on an introductory tour, with stops at museums, historic sites and local attractions. Places to stay and eat; transportation to, from and around your destination; practical concerns; tourism contacts - it's all here! Detailed regional and town maps feature walking and driving tours. Then come the adventures - fishing, canoeing, hiking, rafting, llama trips and more. Never galloped along a beach on horseback, trekked up a mountain, explored ancient sites? Book Summary:

This open access book uses an interdisciplinary approach that not only focuses on social organization but also analyzes how societies and ecological settings were interwoven. How did early modern indigenous Sami inhabitants in interior northwest Fennoscandia build institutions for governance of natural resources? The book answers this question by exploring how they made decisions regarding natural resource management, mainly with regard to wild game, fish, and grazing land and illuminate how Sami users, in a changing economy, altered the long-term rules for use of land and water in a self-governance context. The early modern period was a transforming phase of property rights due to fundamental changes in Sami economy: from an economy based on fishing and hunting to an economy where reindeer pastoralism became the main occupation for many Sami. The book gives a new portrayal of how proficiently and systematically indigenous inhabitants organized and governed natural assets and how capable they were in building highly functioning institutions for governance.

Book Summary:

This title was first published in 2001. This text brings together a collection of empirical studies focusing on the relationships which minority ethnic audiences have with and to media texts, both mainstream and minority. The media which comprise the focus for the essays include television, film, advertising, magazines and the press. The field of media studies has moved beyond the model of media consumer as passive recipient towards individuals and groups who are altogether more engaged, responsive and critical. But studies of the interactive media consumer often fail to consider the specific characteristics of "race" and ethnicity which come into play for minority ethnic audiences, and this book aims to add to the limited knowledge of the ways in which ethnic markers intervene in textual understanding and contestation.

Book Summary:

Performance on the Edge takes the reader on a journey across geographical borders and conceptual boundaries in order to map out the new territory of contemporary theatre, dance, media arts and activism. Working across social, cultural and political fault lines, the book explores performance as both process and contact, as the commitment to political activism and the reconstruction of community, as site-specific intervention into the social and technological structures of abandonment, and as the highly charged embodiment of erotic fantasies.Performance on the Edge addresses the politics of community-oriented and reconstructive artmaking in an era marked by the AIDS crisis, cultural and racial polarization, warfare, separatism and xenophobia. Provocatively illustrated with work from North and Central America and Eastern and Western Europe, the book challenges our assumptions about the relations between media and activism, technological imperatives and social processes and bodily identities and virtual communities.

Book Summary:

A century ago, the idea of indigenous people as an active force in the contemporary world was unthinkable. It was assumed that native societies everywhere would be swept away by the forward march of the West and its own peculiar brand of progress and civilization. Nothing could be further from the truth. Indigenous social movements wield new power, and groups as diverse as Australian Aborigines, Ecuadorian Quichuas, and New Zealand Maoris, have found their own distinctive and assertive ways of living in the present world. Indigenous Experience Today draws together essays by prominent scholars in anthropology and other fields examining the varied face of indigenous politics in Bolivia, Botswana, Canada, Chile, China, Indonesia, and the United States, amongst others. The book challenges accepted notions of indigeneity as it examines the transnational dynamics of contemporary native culture and politics around the world.

Book Summary:

Despite her best efforts (and the fact that she was once voted 'TV's most spankable personality'), Sami Lukis has always been romantically challenged. Aside from a handful of serious long-term relationships, she's been a serial dater for the better part of thirty years. It's not like she hasn't tried to find the one - she's given it a bloody good go. She's been on more blind dates than is reasonable for anyone to endure in a lifetime. She's dated guys on almost every continent. But for reasons she can't quite understand, she seems to be a dating weirdo magnet. There was the date with Kevin Costner's bodyguard (yep, the Bodyguard's bodyguard), and the delightful gentleman she later found out was an armed robber. The sleazy TV exec who loved the word 'moist'. The bloke who wanted to rent her ovum. The guy who proposed on their first date. The loser who sent her a selfie featuring a hickie - which he hadn't got from her. Oh, and that time she realised she might be dating her cousin. Now Sami's sharing her dating disasters in the hopes of connecting with anyone who's experienced the highs and lows of the always nerve-wracking, sometimes uplifting and often stomach-churning roller-coaster of romance. Romantically Challenged is an unintentionally entertaining romp through the men, the meetings and the misadventures a woman can face on her quest to find love.

Book Summary:

Through an interdisciplinary range of case studies from across the Northern rim of Europe, this volume shows how place reinvention as a concept affects not only global cities but also marginal regions. Linking place reinvention to the economic, the symbolic and the political production of space, the volume puts forward insights into how 'marginal areas' understand their role in the global competition between places and regions through their branding strategies, playing with representations of the unique and the ordinary, urban and rural, reindustrialization and cultural economy. It also shows how and why some places seem to retain and strengthen their uniqueness, whilst others are losing their local distinctiveness in the struggle to survive.
