Book Summary:

The year is 2050. The space shuttle to the moon has been a reality since 2030. There have been scientists, explorers, politicians, entertainers, and celebrities. Just about every type of scientific type person has been or has plans to go to the moon, but no ordinary people have been included. Black, white, brown, or yellow, no regular ordinary people have been to the moon. Finally, in 2050, the USA government has decided it is time to send some regular folks to the moon. A contest was held to pick three lucky souls to be sent to the moon. Each person selected could also bring a friend. And the best part is that the government claims once the lucky winners get to the moon, there would be a surprise waiting for them. Young Duncan (Dunk) Sylers, eleven years old and from the city of Compton, California, enters the contest. You guessed it. Dunk wins and decides to take his younger cousin Drew on the exploration of a lifetime. Follow along as Duncan, Drew, and the other winners (including a wannabe hippie who brings his parrot as his guest as well as an aging actress and her equally washed up boyfriend) travel toward the moon. Do they succeed? Youll have to read the book.

Book Summary:

“Birds are my passion,” says Joanna Burger, “but parrots are my weakness.” Fifteen years ago, when se adopted a neglected, orphaned thirty-six year old parrot named Tiko, she entered on of the most complex relationships of her life. Sullen and hostile when he entered Dr. Burger’s home, Tiko gradually warmed as she carefully persuaded him of her good intentions. Eventually he courted her, building nests inside household furniture during mating season and trying to coax her into them. He nursed her vigilantly through a bout with Lyme disease, regularly preening each strand of hair on the pillow as she slept. For a while he even fought her husband for her attentions, but eventually theirs became a relationship of deep mutual trust. The Parrot Who Owns Me is also the story of the science of birds, and of parrots in particular (America’s third most commonly owned pet, after cats and dogs). Woven into the narrative are insights and fascinating revelations from Joanna Burger’s work — not only about parrots, but about what it means to be human. By turns delightful, hilarious, touching, and enlightening, The Parrot Who Owns Me introduces us to an unforgettable bird and his human companion, whose friendships tells us much about ourselves.

Book Summary:

When West leaves his bedroom window open, little did he know his scent was luring the most ancient of species. It was a scent that the reptile had searched for its whole life. Through this window came Ral, the tiny leader and oracle of the Dragons of Asgard. This was a dragon clan that had gone unnoticed on Earth for thousands of years, awaiting the one called Zod, who was predicted to rise up and fight for the Dragons of Asgard, freeing them from their enemies grasps forever. Ral reveals to West that his clan of dragons will soon die out, because the Golden One, a massive golden dragon that awoke from its thousand year sleep, has begun to hunt them down, devouring their flesh and quenching its thirst with their blood to gain the tiny dragons unique powers. Ral speaks of a ship that was sent, but never arrived, which was to rescue the tiny dragon clan. When West and Michelle hear about a UFO crash that many eyewitnesses had seen over the city of Needles, California, they quickly put two and two together. West and his two friends decide that the only way to save the tiny dragons is to get their ship back and send them home. Believing the UFO to have been taken to a secret military base nearby, West borrows his father’s classic 68 Corvette and they go on a road trip to Area S4, 13.5 miles southwest of Area 51. This sci-fi/fantasy novel is based on a true UFO crash that took place on May 14, 2008 in Needles, California and can be read in a supplement at the end of this book.

I’ve only lived once, and I’m determined to make this life count. I floated by with routines and deadlines, while she did whatever made her world brighter. “Can you hold my umbrella?” The day she asked me that fateful question, I knew everything would change. While orphaned twins try to follow the straight lines set by their late parents, an unexpected fox-like visitor comes back to fill in the empty gaps of our lives, a hall of mirrors, another fiery incident that leads to another crash, as panic of losing more loved ones emerges. Book Summary:

The two-time PEN/Faulkner Award finalist and author of Mulligan Stew paints a “clever parodic take on the contemporary art world” (Publishers Weekly). How often have you been subjected to supposed artists, art critics, or works of “art” that left you wondering what the word even means? And just who the hell are these pseudo-cool people who think they know what you should like better than you? In this bitingly satiric, imaginative tour of gallery, museum and performance art exhibitions, Gilbert Sorrentino brilliantly and mercilessly skewers the precious pretensions of the contemporary art world and its flailing attempts at maintaining relevance in a society whose attentions have strayed to the immediacy of pop culture. With precise comedic timing and an eye toward lascivious detail, Sorrentino is the perfect guide through this hilariously absurd and “deliciously funny” world (Booklist).
